"Weev") is one unsavory dude (not to mention a raving anti-Semite): check out this New York Times piece on Internet Trolls if you don't believe us. After all, it's not really a stretch that law enforcement might be after someone who's in possession of ecstasy, cocaine, LSD, and various other pharmaceuticals.

A computer expert who belongs to the group of hackers that broke into AT&T's servers last week to steal iPad customers' e-mail addresses has been arrested and jailed on drug charges following a search of his residence by the FBI.

Andrew Auernheimer is being held in jail in Fayeteville, Arkansas, according to police officials.

He was arrested earlier after FBI agents said they discovered illegal drugs in his dwelling. The agents were executing a search warrant that was obtained in connection with their investigation of the AT&T breach.

Auernheimer belongs to Goatse Security, a group that comprises a handful of self-styled computer security "researchers." Goatse members have admitted to breaking into AT&T's servers and obtaining the e-mail addresses of more than 100,000 iPad users. The group said their intention was to expose AT&T security vulnerabilities.

Among the e-mail addresses obtained by the group were those belonging to high-profile individuals like New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, and Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

In his profile on the business networking site Linked In, Auernheimer describes himself as an "8-year IT pro." Beyond his current affiliation with Goatse, he lists stints at software developer Aptworks and escrow agency First American Title Holding Company.

AT&T has said it plans to work with legal authorizes to prosecute the hackers who broke into its servers.

AT&T "does not tolerate unauthorized access to its customers' information or company websites," said AT&T chief privacy officer Dorothy Attwood, in an e-mail last weekend to iPad users affected by the breach.

"We will cooperate with law enforcement in any investigation of unauthorized system access and to prosecute violators to the fullest extent of the law," Attwood said.

Attwood called Goatse's actions malicious. "The hackers deliberately went to great efforts" to obtain iPad owners' e-mail addresses, she said. The carrier said it has since fixed the vulnerability that gave the hackers access to its servers.

Actually, Andrew has no relationship to designadventures or sealpac. Years ago before sealpac came the US market, Andrew grabbed the domain name (before we knew anything about his mental issues). We want it back. We didn't even remember until this week that his name was on it as we paid for several years in advance and the recent renewal was paid by credit card. Design Adventures is my little interior design business-never had a thing to do with Andrew. Design Adventures and Sealpac have nothing to do with Andrew and have never done business with Andrew. In fact, even as parents we have never financially supported him since he left home. Years ago our communication with him was come home, get help, go to school and we will then and only then support you. He refused.

Andrew was never abused or neglected. When he lived with us he was a totally different person, prior to his substance abuse issues. He became a different person in Cal. He had to get as far away from us as he could to participate in this kind of behavior because we would have called the cops and kicked his ass to the curb.

From his postings he is deranged and a drug addict. We are not asking for sympathy for him. Andrew has been detained by the FBI twice this year? They didn't do anything?!@#!!! I don't know what the strategy should be for you or I if the FBI won't do anything to stop him and we can't find him. You don't want to call the FBI and we don't care if you do, if they need to they will contact you. Andrew's name has been available online for years so it never even occurred to me to disclose his name but I also spoke to law enforcement a year ago so even they knew.

There are so many crazies on the web just like Andrew and we simply stopped trying with him when he went to California years ago. He would not give us his address or location. Truthfully, until about a year ago we didn't even know about this ugly, racist rhetoric because we weren't wasting our days looking.

Many years ago he was online railing against Bill O'Reilly and the far right and saying anything to inflame. He used to be a radical liberal. I think he is so crazy now that he might be convinced that martians are ruining his life, not Jews. He's nuts. Sadly he is not alone. I could not believe, when I finally got wind of his livejournal, how many people were posting horrible things in agreement. I felt physically sick. All of those people are also a danger and who knows who those people are. They were smart enough to not post their own photos and link their real names to their ugly words. They may be more of a danger because we don't know who they are.

We too are victims of Andrew. The hardest part for all of us is that he used to be normal. He loved us and was sweet and kind to his siblings. Several years ago he developed a relationship with a girl with a serious drug problem. He began by using xtc regularly and eventually graduated to LSD and heroin. About three years ago he had a mental breakdown and began hearing voices and talking to himself. He vanished from our lives. My children would log into AIM to see if he was still alive; if he was logged on too long or not recently they would worry something had happened to him. There are references to his lavish lifestyle on this thread but the sad truth is he is paranoid schizophrenic and has been homeless a number of times.

Out of what hole did Andrew Auernheimer and his gang of iPad hackers crawl?

The hacker ethic has taken a long downward slide since Steve Levy traced it back to its roots at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in his classic "Hackers, Heroes of the Computer Revolution" (1984).

But few have dragged it deeper in the mud than Andrew Auernheimer, 24, a member of the Goatse Security gang that claimed responsibility for pulling the device IDs and e-mail addresses of more than 114,000 iPad owners through a hole in AT&T's (T) network.

Auernheimer's arrest earlier this week on felony drug charges is the least of it. We know plenty of good people who have been charged with possession of cocaine, Ecstasy, LSD, and schedule 2 and 3 pharmaceuticals.

But it takes special kind of ignorance to produce The iProphet -- the 12 racist, antisemitic and frankly lunatic podcasts still available for download, as Edible Apple first reported, Apple's (AAPL) own iTunes Store.

Given how unbalanced he appears to be, Auernheimer has gotten a remarkably free ride from the press over the years, especially from Gawker Media's Valleywag, which credited him with a homophobic attack on Amazon's bookstore and broke the AT&T story after Goatse (a sly reference to an obscene meme) fed it to them. Auernheimer's published defense of Goatse's iPad exploit was widely quoted in the media.

"We did it as a service to our nation," he wrote. "We love America and the idea of the Russians or Chinese being able to subvert American infrastructure is a nightmare."

But it's unlikely that the Wall Street Journal or the New York Times would have run profiles of Auernheimer if they'd heard him rant against the "Jew media," disparage Black Americans, or take sick pleasure in the deaths of celebrities, from Ed McMahon to Farah Fawcett.

There's plenty of Auernheimer -- or "Weev" as he likes to call himself -- on the Web, but we'll follow Edible Apple's lead and not do him the favor of providing any links.

CNET notes that Auernheimer is a “key member of Goatse Security group”, and while Auernheimer and his cronies have asserted that they did the public a service by bringing AT&T’s security vulnerability to the forefront, it appears that Auernheimer is anything but a kind-hearted civil servant. He apparently is not too fond of Jews, Blacks, Muslims, and Gays, and not surprisingly, he’s off his rocker.

And believe it or not, there’s more to the story. We won’t link to it from here, but Weev’s Livejournal is rife with derogatory and hateful comments, and the Weev also appears to be a religious nutjob who heaps praise upon Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church, which if you’re unfamiliar, claims that all natural disasters and terrorist attacks stem from God punishing societies that tolerate homosexuality.

Moreover, one of Weev’s psuedonyms is “theiProphet”, a name under which he produces videos, or “sermons” as he calls them, centering on international conspiracy theories and other topics. In one “sunday sermon”, Weev purports to “reveal the truth” while noting that he’s “tweaked” out of his mind.

And, believe it or not, but Weev’s hateful content can also be found on iTunes under the podcast “The iProphet” where the content falls under the banner of “The Last Church of Christ.” Hopefully Apple will remove it soon.
